Traditional Japanese dance demonstration and workshop
The jiutamai meeting will be an opportunity not only to view this classical Japanese dance, performed by Mistress Hanasaki Tokijyo, but also to learn something about its history, technique and the place that this art form occupies in Japan’s culture today.
Jiutamai dance workshop
21 June, 5.30–9.00 pm
22 June, 5.30–6.30 pm (continuation)
With its codified form and choreographies passed on from generation to generation, each of which is a complete story referring to everyday life, traditional beliefs or history, the jiutamai dance can be compared to a mirror reflecting all the major components of traditional Japanese culture. The workshop is thus an excellent opportunity to experience directly this cultural wealth of Japan.

The meeting and the workshop will be conducted by Hanasaki Tokijyo, a jiutamai mistress, head of the Hanasaki-ryu school in Tokyo, and chairperson of the Hanasaki Jiutamai Association. Hanasaki Tokijyo is both a teacher and a performer, appearing regularly at the National Theatre in Tokyo, as well as on many other stages across Japan. She is also one of the best known representatives of this style on the international scene: she has performed a large number of times in such countries as France, Lithuania and Poland.
The mistress will be assisted by her student, Hana Umeda, a dancer and performer of classical Japanese dances living in Warsaw.
