The catalogue contains descriptions and illustrations of 122 items from these two collections. Formed in 1764 in Osaka, the Kodaimaru Company still makes and sells Japanese kimonos in the traditional style, while generations of the Yamanaka family have been preserving kimonos from several periods in Japanese history with utmost care. The exhibition included garments for men, women and children, intended for a variety of occasions. It offered a review of the extraordinary wealth of weaving and dyeing techniques, still cultivated in Japan today.
The publication is complete with essays about the history of Japanese textiles and garments, and rudimentary information about the kimono – its making, decoration, symbolism and the etiquette involved in wearing it.
