Another publication in the Polish Japanism series, the book focuses on Julian Fałat, the first Polish artist who visited Japan in 1885. It was prepared to accompany an exhibition of the same title on the 80th anniversary of his death. Julian Fałat (1853–1929) was a painter, a professor and Rector, for a number of years, of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, known primarily for his watercolours. Around 1900, inspirations drawn from Japanese art became manifest in his painting, particularly in his landscapes. The publication opens with fragments of the artist’s memoirs (Yokohama), followed by a richly illustrated timeline of his life and work, and a selection of essays about Japanism.
