Poland’s first monographic publication on the Japanese inspirations in the work of Leon Wyczółkowski, one of the leading painters and printmakers of the Young Poland period, Wyczół in Japan accompanied a unique review of the artist’s works – paintings in oil, pastels, watercolours, drawings and prints, on loan from over twenty Polish and foreign museums as well as private collections – inspired by ukiyo-e woodcuts and their major thematic categories, such as kiku (chrysanthemum), kachō-ga (pictures of flowers and birds), waterfalls and trees, and also Japanese scrolls (kakemono and emaki) and dyeing stencils (katagami). An important feature of the publication is Wyczółkowski’s own collection of Far Eastern art, including Japanese woodblock prints (by such artists as Harunobu, Utamaro and Hiroshige) and artistic craft objects. Perhaps the most valuable works by Wyczółkowski reproduced in the book are the series of masterpieces showing landscapes of the Tatra Mountains, condensing all the major characteristics of Japanese aesthetics and providing one of the most representative examples of Polish Japanism. The publication offers a new interpretation of the seemingly well-known works of the celebrated Polish artist.
