The first book in Poland to analyse comprehensively one of the most fascinating phenomena in the history of modern art – Polish Japanism, i.e. Japanese art inspirations in the work of the Polish painters and printmakers of the Young Poland period – the publication offers a new interpretation of a seemingly well-known period and artists (Boznańska, Fałat, Stanisławski and his students, Weiss, Ruszczyc, Wyczółkowski and Wyspiański), juxtaposing works by Polish artists of the Modernist era with selected examples of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and silk paintings (by such masters as: Hokusai, Hiroshige, or Utamaro), and also sculptures and artistic handicrafts. This surprising approach encourages the reader to make comparisons, to look – almost automatically – for similarities and differences between Polish and Japanese arts, and by revealing the clear and deep analogies between the two cultures, to engage in intercultural dialogue. The reader is also confronted with new interpretations of works that are commonly known. The publication – with fine graphic design by Rafał Sosin – is a summary of the research and exhibition project created by Anna Król and conducted since 2005 at the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology.
